Cyprus has entered the final stage of its technical assessment for joining the Schengen Zone. A delegation of 25 specialists — including representatives of the European Commission, several EU member states, as well as Europol and Frontex officials — has arrived on the island to conduct the review.
The experts are evaluating Cyprus’s level of preparedness in key areas such as security, law enforcement, and migration management. They are also examining the country’s internal security systems, data protection measures, and compliance with human-rights standards. Particular focus is being placed on the procedures Cyprus uses to return migrants who do not have the legal right to remain within Schengen member states.
Nicosia now awaits the European Commission’s official report, which is expected to confirm the country’s technical readiness and may include further recommendations. According to Kathimerini, the initial findings of the evaluation appear positive. Once the technical phase is completed, Cyprus will need to secure unanimous approval from all Schengen member states — the final political step toward joining the zone.
